Tornado!

This is your on-the-spot reporter, "Not-So-Cowardly Cathy" coming to you from the east coast of New Jersey, here in the United Colonies.  There's a tornado under me.

It's raging up the coast and sadly, caused a dozen deaths in North Carolina.  At the moment there's a strict flood warning in effect, beeping into the TV news continually and advising people not to drive.

Can you imagine this, a tornado in New Jersey?

My usual bent would be to cooly, scientifically discuss the genesis of tornadoes, what feeds and sustains them, ad nauseum, but I'm just too excited watching the water rise in our parking lot.  It's up to the white-walls on the tires.  Holy moley this is exciting!

When I was growing up and trying to be seen amongst several others busy doing the same thing, my brother Chris and I used to love hurricanes and thunderstorms, running out in them in our Dr. Dentons sans everything else.  It was thrilling!  The teeming rain, God angrily bowling up in the great clouds, pounding our bare feet happily into the pools of rising water, the lake forming at the end of our street where our house sat because we lived on a downward incline, laughing like loons.  Fabulous!  More please!  We'd no idea about lightening and its dangers, nor did we care about the even greater danger of the neighbors who envariably threatened to call the police if we didn't get inside and where are your parents anyway you children?  LOL we really had a time - and where were our parents, well, God bless and forgive them, they couldn't have stopped us anyway.

So thank you Mom and Dad, for allowing me to stay out there against all better judgment giving me these wondrous, sweet memories of another time, another place, another life.

Tornado on the way!

Cathy for goodness sake!! lol   You silly girl!  Be careful!

I do not like lightening!  It hit my back yard when I was married to my second husband, and it blow out my TV set, and rocked my house like there was an earthquake!  Scared the peewaddle out of me!

Stay safe!

All kidding aside, I am terrified of lightning - though find it awesome to watch. Hope you are safe. What a silly goose you are, but as silly as you may be, I rather envy it - but (just a little bit).

I live in Tornado Alley (in Texas) and grew up in Kansas.  My grandparents farmed and out in the country in the spring and early summer it seems we saw a lot of tornadoes.  We were coming home from Dallas one time and had to OUTRUN one.  There was NO place to stop and fortunately it wasn't coming directly at us. Scary. My boys grew up sitting on our covered porch watching storms. Hope you stay safe and dry, out of harms way.

I loved storms too Cathy when I was younger. I liked daring the lightening to strike me down! Enjoyed this entry. Sometimes it is good to be just caught up in the elemental moment!
In answer to your question about me writing poetry, I do occasionally spew out drivel, but I am not a natural poet. Prose comes to me more easily. Writing poetry to me is akin to giving birth, painful, protracted and only worth it when the result is a beautiful baby! None of my poetry will ever be described as beautiful!

we were lucky this time and dodged the tornados.  years back some came through town -- took one of my parents best shade trees with it.

Heard about the tornadoes from Joyce [springangel235] who had to go into the basement as it was a bit close for comfort. Keep safe!

Wonderful entry! I remember my Mom walking my brother and I out into the eye of a hurricane just so we would experience the magnifcient yet powerful changes in nature.

It's good to see that some kids learnt to appreciate their parents. All that you write and how you think was instilled by your parents, glad to see that they did a good job.  Jim Halliday    x

Cathy! You are usually my "alert" for meteor showers. I had to find out through Accuweather that Leonoid meteor showers are TONIGHT (Saturday, Nov 18) ... "If you are lucky enough to live in a part of the nation that will have clear skies tonight, go to a dark location away from the city lights and gaze at the sky, especially between 11:45 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. EST. If you look close enough, you should catch a glimpse of one of the hundreds of meteors that will enter the Earth's atmosphere during the Leonid meteor shower."

when I was a kid I did it in the slums of Manchester a city in the North/West of England surrounded by companies that churned out germs and poisons as so many of them still do. I swore an oath to myself then when I was 14 years old. My kids would not grow up in that. They didn't. But the water they kicked and stamped in was clean and I still yelled at them to get out of there.
Nicely written.   Jim x
