Could This Be Why?

Okay La Gioconda, also known as Mona Lisa, I think I figured out why your smile is so enigmatic.  Aha!  It's because you have no eyebrows!  That's it!  DaVinci painted you with no true eyebrows, thereby leaving you with no real expression.  All we see is the shadow of your browbone.

Same as with a dog, look at a dog and you'll see why he has that "look" you know the one - like you wonder what he's thinking?  No eyebrows!  Dogs don't have them either!  Just take a person's eyebrows away and have them smile a little, and voila!  Another Mona Lisa.

Okay, mystery solved.  Someone inform the French.

Interesting! Among conspiracy theories is that the Mona Lisa is actually a mirrored self portrait of Leonardo himself with some features removed such as his eyebrows. Not sure how your dogs figure into other theories, but you all are barking up the same tree. <grin>

Cathy 2 Patrick: Yes, I remember that rumor, and others.  Historical fact is more simple.  Rich Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo commissed his wife Lisa's portrait.  Her name was Lisa Gherardini, and the painting was entitled La Gioconda.  A few decades after DaVinci died, when his biographer positively identified her as Lisa Gherardini, people started calling her Madonna Lisa (Madonna in Italian is a form of the sobriquet Mona) hence we have Mona Lisa.  Interesting, yes?
