The Bear Facts

Brother Chris is back from his month-long stay in hospital, and getting healthier slow but sure.  He took this picture only about 10' away from the many black bear in his suburban area.  Chris welcomes wildlife with a healthy respect for their terriorial needs.  Not everyone does, however (no kidding)  I had a discussion with someone the other day that started like this:

"Oh these black bears are all over New Jersey, what a nuisance and a danger!  They're all over our property, we can't feel safe!" ad inf.

I dared to think, and then spoke:  "Actually, we're all over their property and making a nuisance of ourselves leaving our junk garbage within easy reach, making it unsafe for them" ad inf.

After some back and forth, I asked if this person thought there were too many humans on the planet, comparitively speaking.  They weren't sure.  I brought up many examples of dire problems caused by over-popuation, the whole 9 yards.  Then  I took a breath and said:

"If a depletion in humans would solve the myriad problems and pandemics we face, I'd be first in line to go - as long as I could take a few hundred million with me."

Just a question:  would you?

Wow, we are a selfish set arn't we.  I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to give my life for a bear, even though it may be the right thing to do.  But in hindsight, I might be more brave than I think, since I'm the type that will stop and go rescue a poor lil turtle trying to get across a main road, lol.  I had traffic stopped the last time, people were pretty decent about it, and I even got a toot of appreciation from a school bus.  Don't recall the situation with your brother Chris, but I hope he is doing well now and on the mend.  Sorry to hear he was in the hospital.

If leaving this earth would solve a myriad of problems, sure I'd go.   I am more for fixing human problems than animal problems, but, hey, I am FIGHTING hard for animals, too.  You KNOW I love those animals!!  We can take care of both perhaps.  Yep, we have had a crazy population explosion.  We need to take care of EVERYONE.  We are not good at taking care of the needs of people OR animals.  Just thinking... Love you, my dear Cateri xox

Well, whether the eradication of mankind would provide the bear essentials for the survival of the planet, dunno Cathy ;-)

I wouldn't, I think we are doing a fine job of destroying ourselves without volunteering it. - Missy

Cathy 2 Missy:  But why destroy ourselves at all, as a species?  Culling the numbers of an out-of-control herd always leads to success, I'd say.

id be quite happy if nearly every other person on the planet just vanished one night, as long as i was left, and loads of horny women too.
:O)

You know, Cathy, I'm all for curing the ills of our wee planet. Especially since we created most of the mess ourselves. But I'd really have to think that one through.

I know a few people I'd like to put IN THAT line... LOL!!!

I'm totally ready to go home anytime the Lord wants to take me.... But I'm pretty happy to be here for awhile longer.   I do agree with you that there are way too many of us, though.... and I do think that we are the problem over stepping OUR boundaries, not the wild animals, very sad.

I found you through Gerry of Daughters of the Shadow Men.  I LOVED what I found here.  I'll be back.

Glad that Chris is back from his plight in hospital and trust he is better for it.

In answer to your question – No way Jose!

Human and animal society is not yet at melting point and, after all, we are all God’s creatures that just have to live with and tolerate each other, like it or lump it. Over population in any species does burden and strain its delicate society but nature usually has a natural remedies to that. We cannot answer for the animals and who encroaches on whose territories.

As humans, if we take the Chinese route, culling those children which  are one more than their family allowance or the African method of some despot ensuring an across the board cull, in a famine or two, or by the use of his secret police, or in the European quest that picks a fight with their neighbours for living space, and the resultant war culls more than required then we are not fit to govern the planet, ourselves, and should not answer to and for the incredible stupidity that mankind  has secreted on himself.

If we land based animals only take up 20% of the known world then let’s create another in which we can utilize all our space and not just congregate in little pockets alongside economic, cultural, ethnic, financial or racial lines.

The solution for this is so simple.........................Live and Let Live

Cathy 2 Deb:  Basically, if you could press a magic button that would evaporate about a few hundred million humans, thereby balancing out the number of our species with the other life forms sharing this planet, would you do it?  Keep in mind how much damage humans do, comparitively speaking.

I have always said, we will be the death of this planet. I think Mother Nature will win hands down in the end, she aint doing too bad at the moment!

Great question... that I don't know if I can answer... however, we are totally all over the black bears area.  Poor dears...

I would rather have bears than ginger people. I'm sure we can arrange a swap if anyone is interested.

That's a good question. I'd have to think it over. I suspect my answer might be different if I didn't have a son that I want to see grow up. I'd like to see my grandchildren someday. So my answer now would be no. Selfish? Yup!

I have actually thought about this question since I am pro life and one of the arguments against it is that it would drastically increase the population if abortion were disallowed and not believed in  I have concluded that life is not all bad, and we do not do anything about problems until we are faced with them.  Since death comes to all of us, I have also thought that I would rather die with a spiritual outlook on life, respecting life from conception, rather than getting into some of the shocking reasons some people decide to abort.  (didn't like that father, maybe next year, etc.)  I have always leaned toward the idea that life has something eternal in its makeup which changes form when the body is gone.  If that is so, then we will surely meet these children  who have joinied the other children who have died young.  It is a sobering thought. Surely there is room for souls without end in a universe where 4 galaxies come together as big as our Milky Way or bigger.  We have just got a lot of room out there, and we are sweating room!   Gerry http://journals.aol.com/gehi6/daughters-of-the-shadow-men/

Yes, it IS a problem-we are invading their space! I drive down my street, and I see deer all over the place, and I don't like it-it brings ticks and all kinds of problems to our back yards-but what to do? I don't have the answers! I guess the black bears will be here soon too; good subject luddie-you always keep us
thinking! I love journals like this-thanks again-and the pictures are great too!

I'll be honest ... I don't know if I would.  I like your thought process and perhaps you've now just given me another dare.  Dang you!
