Big Brother Won't Give Up

I'm extremely happy today as you may've gathered from that last post.  Now I'm frustrated about something, STILL HAPPY because I'm alive to be able to speak on it, but it's such an unfair law I thought I'd throw it out there.  Get your catcher's mitt on:

In Belmont, California it is now illegal to smoke in your own home.  Remember the 60's, "Big Brother Is Watching You"?  Little did we realize how much, eh?  Now, exactly how is this law to be enforced?  I know, the politicos will say "We're confident the average citizen is law-abiding" or some such crapola.  Come on, this is another one of our civil rights being stolen.  Yes, we have a right to be unhealthy if we chose to.  Silly, yes, but you just can't legislate common sense.

Any thoughts?  Oh yes, and I'm STILL HAPPY!!!  Come on, life, give me your best shot!

Belmont CA? Where is that? I live near a beach city called Belmont Shores. That would be like them to pass a law like that. We already can't smoke in any public building. That is fine with me, though, since I don't smoke. But, your home?? Dare I ask...what next?

What's next?  And why were the good citizens of Belmont asleep at the wheel?  My thought?  Harumph!  Just like we sheep to let that one slide by us or follow merrily along.

Holy Smoke! LOL  That's a bit extreme.  Not in your OWN HOME?  This is what Maria Shriver gets for marrying a republican.

Even though I think it is a ridiculous law I guess I would be one of the law abiding citizens since I outlawed smoking in my home years ago.  Just can't stand the stench it leaves behind.

I agree that this law goes too far. I'm a nonsmoker and I don't allow anyone to smoke in my house but I don't demand that other people not light up in their houses. I firmly believe in smoke free public places because we all visit public places and I shouldn't have to be subjected to anyone's second hand smoke. However, I don't have to visit anyone's home. If I don't want to be around their smoke, I can chooose not to visit them. If a person cannot smoke in his or her own home, where are they allowed to smoke? It makes no more sense than making it illegal to eat chocolate in your home. After all, they are always telling us that we are a nation full of obese people. I may be a nonsmoker but I agree with you that this law goes too far! you are also so right about how impossible it will be to enforce it!--Sheria

good gawwd... next it will be no sex... 'cmon people.. this is off base and out of bounds if you're a smoker or not.  If you are a non smoker and want a smoke environment fine, smokers will abide...but for the meat head politicians to go to a smoker and demand they not smoke in the privacy of their own home... absurd.  Will they tell them what color curtains?  What they can watch on tv?  ::shaking head:::

What I want to know is how do they plan on knowing if you are smoking in your own home?!?!  They'd be met at my door with a shotgun for illegal search and seizure.  It figure's if it would happen anywhere, it'd be California first!  -  Barbara

Only in America! But it could turn Global if Al Gore has anything to do with it

I agree with you. It is illegal in most of Chicago's South Suburbs to allow someone to sleep on your sofa for more than three days in a row. Now how the hell is anyone going to enforce either of those laws?

I DARE to THINK!

I couldn't believe this one! I had to go and do some research (which I don't have the time for LOL)

Anyway, you can smoke in your own home as long as it is private and detached from other residences.  You CAN NOT smoke if you live in a condo or apartment.  You can not smoke in a park, or at the beach, or on the way out your front door to the car.  You can't sit on your front porch and smoke.

Geeze!  What are the cops gunna do now on their breaks?  Back to doughnuts!  Actually the new "cop food" is powerbars.

Ok any cops reading this, don't get your panties in a bunch.  I have cops in the family and I a member of the police force too!

I digress... Stupid Law!

In your own home?  Wow!  Now I've heard it all.  I am not a smoker but that was shocking.

To Rosemary et als:  Yes, this was a bona fide new story, everything you found to be true is, where an employer can forbifd you to smoke on your break even if in your own car.  As I say, we know it's unhealthy, we have to protect little ones, but how the heck do you legislate common sense and who'd be dumb enough to try??

I hate cigarettes, but to each his own... I think it's just silly to tell people that they can't smoke in their own homes.
